Canvis.app is relaunching as Mapperoni.com

By Brendan McGill, FounderPublished

Mapperoni is a complete rebuild of the Canvis.app platform, and the culmination of everything I've learned in the 8 years since I first built Canvis.app. Canvis was always a very simple, minimal, and imperfect web app, which makes me even more proud that so many people have continued to use it over the years. I've watched countless companies, charities, NGOs, universities and individuals, from every continent, use Canvis to gather data on fascinating and important topics.

I'm privileged to have the time and support to work on a product that has a genuine positive impact on both people and the planet.

Unfortunately I can't maintain two platforms at once. This means Canvis.app will be shut down, with a tentative shutdown date set for 6 months from now (February 9th, 2027). Development on Mapperoni will continue at a much faster pace, with a much higher standard for quality and much more functionality than Canvis ever had.

In this blog post:

  • I'll introduce Mapperoni and all the ways it improves on canvis.app.
  • I'll explain what steps you need to take before canvis.app is shut down.
  • I'll outline my aspirations and the roadmap for Mapperoni.

Introducing, Mapperoni

Just like Canvis.app, Mapperoni is a tool for creating user-friendly survey forms. These survey forms can include interactive collaborative maps, so you can invite people to mark and describe spatial data right on a map. The experience is simple and intuitive even for non-technical users, which makes it a great tool for gathering feedback and data from the public at large.

During the beta phase, Mapperoni was already deployed successfully by real professionals:

  • Mapping hotspots in Slovenian towns during the 2026 heat wave, to inform urban planners and public safety officials.
  • Mapping bird sightings to support conservation efforts in the United Kingdom.
  • As a simple form to collect email signups for a digital product launch.

Here are a few of the new features you might appreciate.

Sovereign data, stronger EU compliance story

After hearing from so many European customers who have complicated compliance requirements, I decided to host Mapperoni entirely in the EU. All application data (projects, accounts, responses) as well as encrypted backups are stored in Germany (via servers running on Hetzner's German locations), without relying on any other public cloud infrastructure providers.

Better survey forms

Mapperoni is launching with all the settings and configurations that modern web surveys demand:

  • Add conditional logic to show and hide content based on prior responses.
  • Constrain responses with minimum values, maximum values, value ranges, required questions and more.

Role-based access for teams and organizations

Mapperoni now organizes all projects into 'Teams', so you can create a team and invite your colleagues to collaborate on all your team's projects together. For security, Mapperoni offers a simple Role system (viewer, editor, owner), so you can keep tight control of who can perform the more sensitive or destructive actions. You can learn more about it on our docs.

Multiplayer editor

Pro teams can work on the same project at the same time. Changes are updated in real time for everyone with the editor open.

Add, edit, delete, or reorder pages, layers, and fields, and your teammates will see the change straight away. Project and map settings are updated too. Roles still apply, so you can invite people to review a project without giving them the power to change it.

Lower price

Even with all these new features, I've lowered prices, making it one of the most affordable survey tools on the internet today. We are launching with three pricing tiers: Starter (free), Personal, and Pro, with an extremely simple pricing model.

The Free and Personal tiers should be sufficient for students and individuals doing small projects with a generous number of participants per month. The Pro tier increases the participant limit even further, and also allows you to invite and collaborate with additional team members. That's it. No feature paywalls, no ads, no surprises.

If you reach your participant limit earlier than expected, we give you time to upgrade so your project won't be disrupted immediately. If you need something larger or bespoke, or have a unique situation, we can offer custom plans too. And as always, we are happy to grant discounts and coupons to projects and organizations that really inspire us.

For current pricing, see our pricing page.

Canvis.app shutdown process

Canvis.app is scheduled to be taken offline and redirected to mapperoni.com on February 9th, 2027. To comply with data protection laws, all user account emails, projects, map data and user responses will be permanently deleted after the shutdown date.

Migrating canvis.app accounts and projects to Mapperoni

Due to legal and technical constraints, we cannot offer an automated way to migrate accounts or projects from the old platform to the new one. I am inviting all canvis.app users to create a new account on mapperoni.com, and to recreate their projects by hand. You will find that the new project editor is much easier to use and provides much more customization and flexibility, allowing you to create projects that weren't possible in canvis.app before.

For customers who have a very large number of responses that have already been collected, we may be able to offer a custom migration service to bring that map data. Contact us if this is a service you are interested in.

Future of Mapperoni

Mapperoni has a few key features that are still missing and that I plan to deploy in the next few weeks. Beyond that, the number of feature ideas is too long to list here. Instead, I have a few personal goals I want to share.

  • To create a focused, simple, functional product that is loved and appreciated by the people who use it.
  • To build software that is objectively good for people and the planet.
  • To stay close with the professionals who use my products, and make sure they have the most positive experience possible.
  • To ensure I never expose my users to the things I personally hate: dark patterns, spam, distractions, buzzwords, ads, and bugs.

This encourages me to move slowly and deliberately, to keep things simple, to keep costs down, and to prioritize your feedback first.
